From March 3 to 4, Zhong Nanshan, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the President-designate of the European Respiratory Society, dr. Anita ⋅ Simmons, conducted a video link to introduce the results and experiences of China’s fight against the new coronary pneumonia outbreak to the European Respiratory Society.
The basic characteristics and detection of the new coronary pneumonia virus
Zhong Nanshan first introduced the basic characteristics of the new coronary pneumonia epidemic, including the genetic sequence of the virus, human-to-human nature, and a variety of transmission routes. Referring to the detection of the new coronary pneumonia virus, Zhong Nanshan introduced the rapid IgM (immunoglobulin M) test paper developed by the team, which can be used as a supplementary means of nucleic acid detection. He also introduced the application of a thermostatic amplification chip that helps testers distinguish between the new corona pneumonia virus, influenza A virus, and influenza B virus.
Hydrogen and oxygen atomizer has some effect
Zhong Nanshan noted that data collected by the team from three hospitals in Wuhan and Guangzhou showed that hydrogen-oxygen atomizers have some effect on alleviating hypoxia symptoms in seriously ill patients and are relatively inexpensive to use. Currently, nearly 1,000 patients have been treated with hydrogen and oxygen atomizers.
Experience sharing on outbreak prevention and control in China
Forecast of epidemic trends
Zhong Nanshan suggested that many of the forecast models published by the research team did not include parameters such as “timely government intervention”, so the forecast results were not accurate. The predictive model previously designed by Zhong Nanshan’s team (the data used in the model as of February 9) incorporates more comprehensive parameters, including strong state intervention, and elimination of the peak reflux after the Spring Festival. The model’s forecast shows that the domestic outbreak will peak in late February and be largely under control by the end of April. Currently, epidemic data are within the model’s forecast range.
Advice to the European Respiratory Society
Zhong Nanshan pointed out that the new coronary pneumonia and influenza must be distinguished by testing, and that China was willing to share its experience and interact with the European Respiratory Society.
